Stressful Life Events, Social Support, and Coping Methods in Cancer Patients

Abstract
This study was performed to evaluate the life stress, social support and coping methods to stress and identify the correlation among the above three variables.

The subjects for this study were 81 admitted cancer patients at a general hospital and 87 healthy people from Oct. 1, 1996 to Feb. 15, 1997 in Taegu city.

The results were as follows ;

1) The mean score of the stress in the cancer patients was higher than that of the healthy.

2) The mean scores of social support and coping methods in the cancer patients were lower than those of the healthy.

3) There was no correlation among the scores of life stress, social support, and coping methods in cancer patients.

4) There was a significant positive correlation between the score of life stress and coping methods in the healthy.

5) There was a significant positive correlation between the score of social support and coping methods in the healthy.
